Chief of Staff

Location: Indianapolis, IN (On-site)

Schedule: Tuesday–Saturday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Compensation: $55,000–$75,000 (based on experience; includes health benefits and PTO)

About the Role

Felege Hiywot Center (FHC) is seeking a Chief of Staff to help lead daily operations and strengthen internal systems. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role ensures the organization runs smoothly and efficiently so leadership can focus on vision and community partnerships.

FHC is an urban, youth-led farm that provides hands-on, real-world experiences for young people through environmental education, youth employment, and community engagement. The Chief of Staff will oversee operations across programs, HR, finance, and facilities while building cohesive processes, supporting staff, and fostering a culture of accountability and growth.

The organization has a small internal team and seasonal youth employees - up to 100 students who work and learn on the farm in a year. Success in this role means creating clear systems that keep the organization running effectively year-round and enabling the Executive Director to focus on long-term growth and impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Executive Director to execute key initiatives and strategic goals
  • Oversee daily operations across programs, HR, finance, and facilities
  • Manage and coach staff, interns, and seasonal youth employees
  • Partner with the bookkeeper and accountant on budgeting and financial planning
  • Implement and improve operational processes and documentation
  • Lead team meetings, track progress, and report updates to the Executive Director
  • Build alignment across departments and improve organizational structure as needed
  • Prepare and support board materials and operational reports
  • Occasionally present updates to the Board of Directors

Qualifications

  • 5+ years in operations, program management, or nonprofit leadership
  • Strong skills in people management, organization, and communication
  • Proven ability to create and refine processes that improve efficiency
  • Familiarity with youth programming, outdoor education, or nonprofit work preferred
  • Financial and HR coordination experience required
